Lucky number 13? Not in Ryan Murphy’s world. American Horror Story: 13 premiered Thursday night on FX with three episodes, bringing back Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange and a who’s-who of franchise favorites for what Murphy has called a “greatest hits season.” Here’s your spoiler-light guide to how to watch, the full episode schedule, who’s back and what we know about the story.
It’s the first new installment since American Horror Story: Delicate wrapped in April 2024, and the timing is perfect: the finale lands just before Halloween.
How to Watch American Horror Story: 13
New episodes air on FX on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET. On the streaming side, Disney’s official Explore Disney+ guide says new episodes are simulcast on FX, Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, all at the same time. Bloody Disgusting’s premiere coverage likewise listed the 9 p.m. ET start on FX and Hulu.
That’s a change from how past seasons typically worked, when episodes landed on Hulu the day after they aired on FX. Some listings still show the older next-day pattern, so if an episode isn’t showing up in your Hulu app Thursday night, check back Friday morning.

- Cable or live TV: Watch live on FX, including through live TV streaming services that carry the channel.
- Hulu: Stream new episodes with an eligible Hulu subscription.

AHS 13 Episode Schedule: Every Release Date Through the Finale
The season has 13 episodes (of course), and they’re shorter than usual. Bloody Disgusting and other outlets report the season is made up of half-hour episodes, a leaner format than the longer episodes fans are used to.
The rollout is front-loaded: three episodes in each of the first two weeks, then two a week, then a solo finale. Here’s the full schedule, per Disney:

That means almost half the season will be out by Oct. 1, and the whole thing wraps two days before Halloween. If you’re planning a spooky-season binge, Oct. 29 is your finish line.
What Is American Horror Story: 13 About?
FX has kept plot details tightly under wraps, but here’s what’s official. The network’s logline promises an installment that “will do justice to everyone’s most feared number,” bringing together an all-star cast, many of them reprising fan-favorite roles from seasons past.
Disney’s guide describes a present-day crisis that pulls in characters from earlier installments, with the number 13 turning up again and again with increasingly sinister consequences. The central newcomer is Ben DeSoto (Joey Pollari), a hospice worker trained by none other than Constance Langdon to care for a wealthy elderly patient with a mysterious past. The more he learns, the darker things get.
A Sequel to Every Season
Back in July, Murphy told Entertainment Tonight that the new season is a sequel to all the seasons combined, according to Bloody Disgusting. He said Paulson is playing six or seven roles and Peters five, and summed it up this way: “It’s like the Avengers!” In his telling, the characters all come together to defeat an ultimate evil.
Early first looks and teasers leaned heavily into Coven imagery. FX’s marketing even urged fans to prepare for a “supreme” surprise, a nod to Coven’s witch hierarchy. Disney says the season’s events include characters from Murder House, Coven, Hotel and Cult, and recommends starting with those if you want to brush up.
We won’t spoil the premiere here. The short version: if you’ve loved any era of AHS, expect familiar faces in unfamiliar situations.
American Horror Story: 13 Cast: Who’s Returning
This is the franchise’s biggest reunion yet. Here’s who’s back, based on FX’s announcements and Disney’s official guide:
- Jessica Lange returns after an eight-year absence as Constance Langdon and more. She told Live With Kelly and Mark this week that she only agreed to return if she could play all four of her past characters (Constance, Sister Jude, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars), and teased a fifth “mystery character,” Bloody Disgusting reported.
- Sarah Paulson returns in several fan-favorite roles, including Coven’s Cordelia Goode.
- Evan Peters revisits Tate Langdon (Murder House), Kai Anderson (Cult) and James Patrick March (Hotel), per Disney.
- Emma Roberts, reportedly as Coven’s Madison Montgomery.
- Angela Bassett, featured in promo art as Marie Laveau.
- Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman.
- John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the Clown and Jamie Brewer as Addie Langdon, per Disney. Mat Fraser also returns from Freak Show.
Lange summed up the season on the talk show by saying that “everybody is a returning character, pretty much.”
New Faces
Newcomers include Joey Pollari, Paul Anthony Kelly (fresh off FX’s Love Story), cult filmmaker John Waters, Mena Suvari and Berto Colón. Bloody Disgusting’s cast list also includes Avantika, Alex Consani, Madelaine Petsch, Tig Notaro, Orlando Jones and Zach Villa, among others.
What Happened With Ariana Grande?
Ariana Grande was part of the original cast announcement in October 2025, but she is not in the final season. Bloody Disgusting reported in July that she was no longer appearing due to a scheduling conflict with her Eternal Sunshine Tour.
This week, Murphy revealed to The Hollywood Reporter what fans missed: Grande was set to bring back her Scream Queens character, Chanel #2, in what would have been the first-ever Scream Queens crossover. “Ariana was touring and I couldn’t make it work,” Murphy told THR. He added that he hasn’t given up on the idea for the future.
How AHS 13 Fits Into the Franchise
American Horror Story premiered on FX in October 2011 with Murder House. Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, it has since explored an asylum, a witches’ coven, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself.
Some quick context on where season 13 lands:
- Long time coming: FX renewed the show through season 13 back in January 2020, per Deadline.
- Crossover history: The series first merged storylines in Apocalypse (2018), which united characters from Murder House and Coven. Murphy said at the time that “the witches will be back,” as TV Insider recalled.
- Big footprint: Disney says the franchise has earned more than 100 Emmy nominations and has been streamed more than 700 million hours worldwide.
- Newcomer-friendly: Disney says new viewers can follow Ben’s story without watching all 132 previous episodes.

Why Fans Are Excited
After the two-part Delicate season and a long gap since, AHS 13 is a deliberate return to the show’s roots. Murphy hinted at this back in 2024, telling Variety that Paulson had told him it was time to “get the band back together,” as TV Insider recounted.
The half-hour format and weekly multi-episode drops also make it an easy show to keep up with, whether you’re a longtime fan or just want something spooky for October. And with Lange back after publicly saying in early 2025 that she wouldn’t return, the season already delivered one genuine surprise before it even aired.
