Florence Pugh is about to play one of the most debated villains in American literature – and you can binge the whole thing in one weekend. East of Eden, Netflix’s seven-episode limited series based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, premieres Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, with all episodes dropping at once.
The series comes from Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the famous 1955 James Dean movie version. Netflix hasn’t posted a specific drop time for the show. Most Netflix original series go live at 12 a.m. Pacific / 3 a.m. Eastern on release day, so that’s the best bet – but check the app Thursday morning to be sure.

What Is East of Eden About? (No Spoilers)
Netflix’s official logline keeps it simple: in the early 1900s, a fiercely independent woman drives a rift between two brothers, sparking a saga that plays out across two generations.
That woman is Cathy Ames (Pugh). She arrives at the home of brothers Adam and Charles Trask, and her presence changes the family forever. The story weaves the Trask family together with the Hamiltons as they settle in California’s Salinas Valley.
Steinbeck built the novel as a retelling of the biblical story of Cain and Abel – two brothers who receive very different treatment from their father. Deadline’s coverage of the trailer notes that the series leans into that framework too. Big themes include good versus evil, what parents pass down to their kids, and whether people can choose who they become.
The biggest change in this version is focus. Deadline reported the series puts “new attention” on Cathy, the book’s famous antihero. Kazan told Tudum she wanted Cathy to feel like a real person rather than just an archetype, and that almost everything in the series has a root in the book.

- Florence Pugh is the draw. Kazan told Tudum she had no backup choice for Cathy and called Pugh “the exact right person” for the role. Pugh is also an executive producer.
- Mike Faist broke out in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Challengers.
- Joseph Zada is having a big fall: he also plays Haymitch Abernathy in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, in theaters Nov. 20, per Deadline. His role here, Cal, is the part James Dean played in 1955.
- Tracy Letts is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (August: Osage County) as well as an actor.
Behind the Camera: Zoe Kazan’s Big Swing
Kazan wrote the adaptation and serves as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart, the screenwriter behind Die Hard and The Fugitive. Deadline reports the directing is split in two:
- Garth Davis (Lion) directs episodes 1-4.
- Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang) directs episodes 5-7.
The series comes from Fifth Season and Anonymous Content. It’s been a long road: Netflix first announced the project with Pugh attached about four years ago, and Deadline reported the first teaser debuted at Netflix’s upfront presentation on May 13, 2026.
Kazan told Tudum she took Steinbeck’s own description of the book as her guiding principle and wanted the series to feel both “epic and intimate.” She also praised Pugh’s camera awareness as “unparalleled” after watching her on set for five months.
Where and when it was made
Filming began in New Zealand in October 2024 and wrapped in March 2025, with reported locations including Auckland, Dunedin and Oamaru. Oscar-nominated composer Laura Karpman wrote the score, and novelist Alexander Chee is credited as a co-writer with Kazan on the back half of the season, according to the show’s Writers Guild listing.
Why Cathy Ames Is the Role Everyone’s Talking About
Readers have argued about Cathy for more than 70 years. Is she pure evil, a survivor, or something in between? Tudum notes her motivations have been debated by generations of readers since the book came out – and the new series leans straight into that question.
The trailer sets the tone. In it, Pugh’s Cathy narrates that evil isn’t always obvious at first glance and can come wrapped in goodness or beauty, per Deadline’s trailer coverage. It’s a hint that the show wants you to feel the pull of the character before you judge her.
That approach has its critics. Some longtime fans of the novel have pushed back online on centering the story on Cathy at all. Whether the gamble works is the big question heading into release day.
East of Eden Netflix vs. the 1955 James Dean Movie
This is where things get personal. The 1955 film was directed by Elia Kazan – Zoe Kazan’s grandfather – and it made James Dean a star as Cal Trask. It was his first major screen role, per Deadline.
But the movie and the series are very different animals:
- Scope: The 1955 film adapts only a small slice of the novel, focusing on Cal, his brother and their father. Zoe Kazan told Tudum the movie “isn’t a super faithful adaptation” of even that portion.
- Center of gravity: The movie is Cal’s story. The new series puts Cathy front and center, while spanning the full multi-generation saga.
- Length: A two-hour film versus seven episodes, which gives the sprawling book much more room.
Kazan said on Tudum that she saw the full story as a chance to “fall in love with all these characters.” If you’ve only seen the Dean movie, expect plenty of storylines that are brand new to you.
Worth knowing: this isn’t the first TV version. ABC aired an East of Eden miniseries in 1981, with Jane Seymour as Cathy.
