Stock market today starts Wednesday with a split screen from Tuesday: the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 529.85 points, or 1.0%, to 52,495.88, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 6.07 points to 26,424.82, according to AP’s index recap on KRMG. Oil eased from near its highest levels since the war with Iran began, and that helped the broader market erase morning losses. Below are the scoreboard, five takeaways and what to watch next. This is general information, not investment advice.

Stock market today: the Tuesday scoreboard

Stocks mostly rose on Tuesday, Oct. 20, helped by strong profit reports from companies such as Equifax and Hasbro, AP reported. Declines in big tech names, including Apple and Meta, held the Nasdaq nearly flat.

Index Tuesday close Change Week Year to date
S&P 500 7,712.57 +21.84 (+0.3%) +0.7% +12.7%
Dow Jones Industrial Average 52,495.88 +529.85 (+1.0%) +0.9% +9.2%
Nasdaq Composite 26,424.82 -6.07 (under -0.1%) +1.1% +13.7%
Russell 2000 2,773.42 +45.12 (+1.7%) +1.9% +11.7%

Think of this stock market today table as a snapshot of who led and who lagged. The small-company Russell 2000 was the standout, up 1.7%. The Nasdaq, still the year-to-date leader, was the only one of the four to finish lower.

Five takeaways from the stock market today

Takeaway 1: oil was the swing factor

AP said oil eased after nearing its highest levels since the war with Iran began. Brent crude approached $112 a barrel in the morning, then fell below $109. That drop helped the S&P 500 erase morning losses.

Investrade’s Oct. 20 market review gives the settlement prices: West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $101.79, down 1.80%, and Brent at $108.79, down 0.69%. Both touched fresh six-month highs during the day before pulling back.

Why it matters is simple. Higher oil tends to push up fuel and shipping costs, which can squeeze company profits and household budgets. When oil retreats, stocks often get breathing room. That is general background, not something from the reports. Investors who track the stock market today often watch crude as closely as they watch earnings for this reason.

Takeaway 2: the Dow rose 1% while the Nasdaq stalled

The gap between the two indexes is the story of the stock market today. The Dow gained 1.0% while the Nasdaq finished essentially flat, a reminder that the market is not moving as one block.

Investrade said the healthcare sector (XLV) hit an all-time high, led by Eli Lilly. Utilities, consumer staples and real estate investment trusts also gained. Tech lagged on worries about AI, debt concerns and high interest rates, Investrade added. Semiconductors snapped a nine-day losing streak on Monday, a run we covered in our Oct. 19 stock market today recap.

Apple and Meta weigh on tech

Loop Capital downgraded Apple to Hold and cut its price target to $330 from $370, citing lower iPhone shipment expectations and rising memory costs. That is one firm’s opinion, not a certainty.

Meta fell about 2% to $689. It was the fifth straight decline since its Oct. 13 high of $771.27. Meta reports earnings after the close on Wednesday.

Takeaway 3: earnings gave the market a push

Earnings drove much of the stock market today. It was a busy morning for corporate reports. Here is what the sources show:

  • General Motors: Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.70 beat the $3.63 consensus on revenue of about $50 billion. GM narrowed its 2026 EBIT guidance to $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and announced a $20 billion buyback. Shares still fell because the guidance implies lower fourth-quarter profit.
  • RTX: Beat estimates and raised its 2026 sales forecast to $97 billion to $97.5 billion and adjusted EPS to $7.65 to $7.75. Shares rallied.
  • GE Aerospace: Third-quarter adjusted EPS of $2.25 versus $2.01 expected, on revenue of $13.29 billion. It raised full-year EPS guidance to $8.00 to $8.10.
  • Northrop Grumman: Kept its sales guidance, raised segment operating income, and shares rallied.
  • 3M: Adjusted EPS of $2.50 versus $2.29 expected.
  • Hasbro: Third-quarter revenue of $1.6 billion versus $1.48 billion expected, and a raised 2026 revenue growth forecast of 7% to 9%.
  • Crown Holdings: Fell on weak fourth-quarter guidance.

The Equifax story deserves a closer look. AP described a strong profit report that helped lift the market. Investrade, however, noted that Equifax cut the midpoint of its 2026 revenue guidance because of weak mortgage activity. Both can be true: profit can beat expectations while the outlook softens.

Deals and global earnings

Adidas said preliminary third-quarter revenue rose 9% and operating profit rose 37%, and it raised its outlook. The figures include a EUR 200 million US tariff refund. Separately, Salesforce agreed to buy Braze for about $5.66 billion, or $47.50 in cash per share.

Takeaway 4: housing data came in soft

September housing starts came in at a 1.221 million annual pace, down 5.9% and well below the 1.305 million consensus. Building permits were 1.400 million, down 0.2%. Pending home sales fell 7.3% to an index reading of 66.0.

That fits with the high borrowing costs we laid out in our report on mortgage rates at 7.4%. A single month of data does not settle the trend, but the direction is worth watching.

Takeaway 5: rates and the dollar stayed in focus

Bond moves also shaped the stock market today. Treasury yields eased slightly. The 10-year yield was 5.116%, down 1.9 basis points. The 30-year was at 5.425% and the 2-year at 4.785%. The dollar index slipped 0.27% to 101.70.

Precious metals diverged. December gold fell $17.50 to $4,142.60, while silver rose $0.73 to $58.00.

The Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates at its upcoming meeting, Investrade said. Because of the Fed’s blackout period, there is no major economic data on Wednesday. You can find official statements and the meeting calendar at federalreserve.gov.

What to watch in the stock market today on Wednesday

The stock market today picture can change by the opening bell. With no major data due, earnings and oil headlines will carry the day. Here is a short checklist:

  1. Meta after the close. The stock has fallen five days in a row, so its report could set the tone for big tech.
  2. Oil. A move back toward $112 Brent would test Tuesday’s relief rally.
  3. Netflix, United Airlines and SpaceX. All three were due to report after Tuesday’s close. We do not have their results in our sources, so check a live quote. Our Netflix earnings preview explains what investors were watching.
  4. The 10-year yield. Holding near 5.1% keeps pressure on growth stocks.
  5. Breadth. Can the Dow and small caps keep leading if tech stays soft?

What we do not know yet

Stock market today numbers move quickly, and this recap reflects Tuesday’s close only. The index figures come from AP, and most sector, commodity, bond, housing and analyst details come from a single Investrade review. We have not independently verified every data point. We also do not know how the after-the-bell reports landed or how Wednesday’s session will open.

What the stock market today means for your money

Breadth is the key idea here. Breadth measures how many stocks are rising versus falling, and Tuesday showed the Dow, small caps, healthcare and defensive sectors doing the lifting while some of the biggest tech names slipped. When leadership shifts like this, an index that is heavy in a few giants can look very different from one that is not.

A 530-point Dow gain and a flat Nasdaq can look contradictory, but they point to a market in rotation, with investors shifting between sectors. That is a good time to check what you actually own.

  • Review your mix. Many broad index funds hold large positions in the biggest tech companies, so a tech stall can matter more than the Dow suggests.
  • Do not chase a single day. Oil-driven swings can reverse quickly.
  • Match risk to your timeline. If you need money soon, a financial professional can help with specifics.

If you are newer to investing, a useful habit is to compare each day’s move with the weekly and year-to-date figures in the table. Tuesday’s Dow gain was large, but the index is still up only 9.2% this year, trailing the Nasdaq and S&P 500. One session rarely changes the bigger picture, and no index figure here is a forecast of what comes next.

The bottom line

The stock market today story is oil easing and earnings lifting the Dow and small caps while big tech weighed on the Nasdaq. With a heavy earnings slate, Meta due Wednesday and the Fed on hold, expect choppy trading.
